A bit of a milestone day as I officially kicked off my long distance open water season and logged my first one-hour swim of the year.
A fantastic swim by Ashley Christopher! England to France in 13 hours 40 minutes in difficult conditions. It was a real pleasure and a privilege to be part of the crew on Ashley’s solo English Channel Swim.
Well that didn’t go to plan. Instead of recovering from a celebratory Babycham in the White Horse in Dover I found myself in a hospital bed in Ashford on Sunday morning. My attempt to swim the English Channel had been foiled in French inshore waters by Swimming Induced Pulmonary Edema (SIPE). I’d been airlifted from my support boat and was in a resuss bed.
Start held off by the weather – too much wind and too strong a tide… The last 36 hours or so has been a rollercoaster of emotions ranging from excitement, nervousness and eager anticipation through to disappointment and finally relief.
